EXPERIMENT A

Do plants move?

What do yo need?

  • A little plant in a pot.
  • A box with a circuit for light designed by you.
This project shows students that plants will always grow towards the light. Students will enjoy seeing which direction the plant grows. Ask them to make predictions on which way they think the plants will grow then compare them with what actually happens.Procedure:
Insert a little pot into a box, with several walls in the way, stopping the light from getting straight to the plant base.
Leave one side open for you to watch.
Water regularly.
Wait for a week or longer to see how the plant tries to reach the light.

Answer the question: which way do you think the plants will grow?
Make your hypothesis, report your findings and draw a conclusion after you test your hypothesis.

EXPERIMENT B

How does a leaf get water?

You need:
- a branch of a tree or a large plant
- a ziploc bag

  • Choose a plant from home or a tree in your backyard, and attach a Ziploc bag to it, enclosing a branch covered in leaves.
  • Seal the Ziploc enough to hold it in place. You can also use a plastic grocery bag and tie the handles in a knot to secure it.
  • Leave the bag on the tree for a week, checking it every day.
  • Observe what happens to the zip bag. Describe and draw your conclusion.

WEEKLY PLAN 18TH MARCH

Here's some work related to the new project: The Guinness Book of Records.

The Guinness Book of Records is the world ‘s biggest list of records. It tells us the fastest and the strongest people in sports, the strongest and the shortest people or buildings, the fattest and the thinnest, the best and the worst in the world. All the records in the Book of Records are true. Some of them are interesting and some of them are funny.

Here are some interesting questions and answers:

Question: How old was the oldest person in the world?
Answer: He was Habib Miyan from India. He lived from 1878 to 2008 – That is 130 years! But he always said that he was 8 years older.

Question: How tall was the tallest person in the world?
Answer: He was 2 metres 72 centimetres tall. His name was Robert Wadlow. He lived in America.

Question: What is the world fastest ball game?
Answer: Baseball? No. Tennis? No. It’s the Spanish game of “pelota”. The fastest ball in “pelota” travelled at more than 300 kilometres an hour!

Question: How heavy was the biggest cabbage in the world? Answer: It was 55.7 kilograms.

There is a new Book of Records every year. Every year people try to break old records and make new ones.

For example: How much spaghetti can one person eat, and how quickly? The record now is 62 metres of spaghetti in 21 seconds! But this man is trying to break the old record. Look at all that spaghetti! Will he be in the new Book of Records next year?
